Honouring Our Founder

June Jeremy OAM

A Wonderful Life. A Lasting Legacy.

At the heart of Contact's story was June Jeremy OAM — a woman of vision, passion and extraordinary determination.

June lifted others, created lasting change and left a legacy that continues to inspire.

We were privileged to have June in our lives. A true force of nature, she was a source of inspiration, courage and wisdom. With her laughter, charm and unwavering determination, June never readily accepted “no” for an answer. She relentlessly pursued the very best for isolated children, their families and communities, believing they deserved access to the services, opportunities and support available to others.

June's contribution was vast and transformative.

She was a pioneer across community arts, early and middle childhood, education and welfare — consistently at the forefront of change. Her vision and leadership helped shape policies, programs and services that continue to make a difference today.

Among her many achievements were the establishment and development of initiatives including the Community Arts Board, the Network of Community Activities, Contact, the Contact Children's Services Switch Board, the Contact Children's Mobile and child and family programs reaching communities across Australia.

Her legacy lives in the countless initiatives she helped shape, the people she inspired and the communities whose lives were changed because she believed something better was possible.

At a time when women were redefining their roles in the workforce and in community life, June was already leading the way. She championed volunteerism, collaboration and innovation, creating opportunities for others and laying foundations that would endure well beyond her own lifetime.

June's vision became Contact's foundation.

Her belief that geography should never determine a child's opportunity became a guiding principle that remained at the heart of Contact's work for 46 years.

As Contact now closes, it is fitting that we remember where the journey began — with one woman who saw what was possible, had the courage to pursue it, and inspired others to join her.

Vale dear June

June, you were loved. You were admired.
Your legacy will never be forgotten.
